Work Proxies Are Changed

They changed the proxies at work this morning. This is irritating because the new proxies block a ton of websites, such as, but not limited to: Youtube, Gmail, and CNN. Those are three websites I access on a regular basis. I realize that is my employers goal, but as a web designer, I think its kind of important to be able to access popular websites for keeping up to date with design trends. Plus there’s nothing wrong with a little entertainment throughout the day as long as it doesn’t keep me from being counterproductive. If anything, it keeps me sane!

Lucky for me I did a little research, and I came across a site called Work Surfing (which ironically isn’t blocked). Work Surfing is a revolutionary way of bypassing websites that are blocked by Firewalls or Filters. I don’t really know exactly how or why it works, and I don’t really care as long as it does work. I’ve tested it with Gmail, which will work if you disable Javascript. Unfortunately, this disables some of the best features such as chat, and some other Ajax driven content, but at least I can check my mail still. Work Surfing also seems to work fine with Youtube.

I think I’ll do some more research and see if I can come up with some alternative/better methods of accessing blocked websites. I’d love to know if anyone else has any methods that work for them.
